Small Farms, Big Dreams Field Day in Neenah

Farmers Union organized an education and fun field day at In Nature’s Thyme on May 7th. During the urban farm field day we explored seeds, soil and sustainability on the micro scale! In Nature’s Thyme is an 1/8 acre urban farm in Neenah. We learned about tools and techniques to optimize small growing spaces.

Phil Popour gave us a tour of his ⅛ acre market garden and learn how he is working to grow “off-grid,” build soil health, manage city regulations, and keep records of his growing business.

We also participated in a presentaion from UW-Madison student Collin VanDeLoo about cover crop research (large scale and small scale).

Alyssa from Little Sweet Flower Farm shared information about adding a pollinator habitat to Phil’s farm in a 50 ft ling area between the fence and the sidewalk.

This was a great small farm networking event with lots of learning and great conversation. I am looking forward to the next Farmers Union field day.
