Last month a new sign was installed at the Knight Lane boat launch parking area to tell visitors about Pope Lake State Natural Area.
Pope Lake is a 54 acre natural area. Pope Lake is part of Hartman Creek State Park. The natural area protects vital habitats in and around the lake. The entire shoreline around Pope Lake is designed as Critical Habitat at the state level, which mandates special protection.
Rich Wetlands
Pope Lake is home to diverse tamarack swamps and a thick understory of shrubs that thrive in the mineral-rich soil.
The area is a thriving bird habitat and home to many dragonflies and damselflies and other insects.
Pope Lake is part of the Upper Waupaca Chain O Lakes. This area is a popular destination for paddlers in the warmer months.
