30,000 Pounds of Food Diverted from Stevens Point Landfill

In 2020 residents of the greater Stevens Point area on our compost route diverted over 30,000 pounds of food scraps (aka organics) from landfill disposal. Is it time for you to finally get on our route too?

In 2020 Stevens Point residents diverted over 30,000 pounds of food scraps from the landfill.

Rising Sand Organics collects food scraps (organics) from homes and businesses in the Stevens Point area. In total, Rising Sand diverted 92,000 pounds through 2020.

Why does this matter?

In the United States, it’s estimated that 30 – 40% of the food supply is wasted.

This wasted food is a cause of methane emissions, a powerful greenhouse gas.

When composted instead, wasted food becomes an essential resource of a pollutant.

Throughout 2020 92,000 of organics have been composted.

Rising Sand Organics and Whitefeather Organics are composting all the wasted food that we collect. Not only is this material kept ouf of landfills, but it is made into a nutrient-rich admendment that boosts soil fertility: compost!

The compost is used to grow organic food for our community.
